Many people have a cartoon image of family therapy: the patients facing the stern therapist in a cold office, with the couple sitting in stiff chairs.
There are some therapists who see their clients in such a sterile, business-like environment.

Our office isn't like that at all. It's in a bright and cozy counseling room with comfortable chairs and a sofa. We feel that the warm atmosphere presents a calm atmosphere, conducive to non-confrontational discussions of problems, and the peaceful search for solutions. |  |

The Helfands' 1850 farmstead is the backdrop for their counseling programs. At the end of a gravel road it is a piece of the bygone era, peaceful and rugged. Their home is re-sided with boards of wood milled from their own trees, clear stained to glow in the sunlight, complete with "new-to-us" exterior windows and doors.
